Adding anchor links within the Modern Editor

What is an anchor link?

An anchor link lets you link directly to a specific text block within the same email, so a reader can jump straight to a section further down the page instead of scrolling to find it.

This is especially useful for long emails such as newsletters or digests, where you might want a table of contents at the top that links down to each section — a calendar of events, a spotlight story, or any other block further down the email.

Note: Previously, achieving this required building a menu block with custom HTML anchor points. Anchor is now available as a link type, so you can set this up without any custom code.

Adding an anchor link

To add an anchor link:

1. Highlight the text you want to turn into a link.
2. Select either link icon in the text toolbar (optionally, either below the highlighted area or at the top of your screen)
3. In the Text link panel, open the Link type dropdown.

By default, Link type is set to URL. Opening the dropdown shows the other link types available, including Anchor.

4. Select Anchor (#) from the list.
5. A Text block field appears. Use this to search for and select the block you want to link to.

Selecting the Text block field shows every text block in your email listed in chronological order, so you can find your destination without needing to scroll down to it first.

Tip: You can also type to search instead of scrolling through the list — for example, typing part of a heading like "lost" will filter the list to matching blocks.

6. Optionally, give your link a name. This is shown internally in Workshop and doesn't appear to recipients — useful for keeping track of multiple anchor links in the same email.
7. Select Save.

Identifying anchor destinations

Once you've linked to a text block, that block is marked so you can find it later:

• Hovering over the block shows a small anchor icon in its top corner.
• Selecting the linked text and hovering over it shows a preview of which block it's anchored to, along with options to edit or remove the link.

You can also open the Styles panel for the destination block and scroll down to the Anchor links section, which lists every link that points to that block.

Testing an anchor link

Select a saved anchor link to jump straight to its destination block, so you can confirm it points to the right place before sending.

Note: The destination block currently scrolls to the top of the visible area rather than centering on screen. Centering the scroll position is being considered for a future update.

Email client support

Anchor links aren't supported by every email client. Workshop shows a reminder about this whenever you're setting up an anchor link, so you can decide whether it's the right fit for your audience.

• You can link to any text block in your email — there's no setup required in advance, so you can add anchor links at any point while building your email.
