What is dynamic content?
Dynamic content lets you control who sees specific portions of your email. Instead of building separate emails for different groups, you can show or hide individual rows based on list membership within a single email.
This is useful any time different recipients need different content — for example, showing one message to managers and a different one to frontline workers, or displaying a section only to non-English speakers. Recipients who aren't included in the visibility rule for a section simply won't see that section when the email is delivered.
Setting visibility for a row or section
To segment your audience, start by opening the visibility settings for the row you want to control.
- Click into the row you want to segment.
- In the row settings panel, select the Visibility tab.
- Under “Who should see this section?”, choose All recipients or Customize recipients.
By default, every row is set to All recipients, meaning everyone who receives the email will see it. Selecting Customize recipients opens additional options for targeting the section to specific lists.
Customizing recipients and naming your segment
Once you select Customize recipients, you'll need to name the segment before choosing who sees it.
- With Customize recipients selected, enter a name in the Name field.
- Choose a name that clearly identifies the audience, such as “Managers” or “Frontline workers”
Note: The name you enter is used internally to identify this visibility setting — it isn't shown to recipients.
Selecting lists to control visibility
Next, choose which lists determine who can see the section.
- Click into the “Show section to members of the following lists” field.
-
Start typing to search for a list by name.
- Select a list from the dropdown to add.
- Repeat to add additional lists — a recipient only needs to belong to one of the selected lists to see the section.
You can also decide whether the section should appear in the web version of the email using the “Show section on web?” toggle.
Saving and confirming your settings
Once you've selected your lists, save your settings to apply the visibility rule.
- Select Save.
- Look for the confirmation message, “Custom visibility set for this section!”, to verify the rule was applied.
- A label with your segment name will appear on the row in the editor so you can identify it at a glance.
Tip: To make changes later, click back into the row's Visibility tab and select Edit to update the name, lists, or web visibility. Select Reset to clear the custom visibility and return the row to All recipients.
